Kazuhiko Matsumura, a Kyoto-based photojournalist who has covered dementia for many years, will hold a photo exhibition entitled “Weaving the Heartstrings” at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES from September 16 to 24 to coincide with World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21 and the publication of his book “Dementia for 7 Million People: Toward a Society Where People Can Live Together” (Kamogawa Publishing), co-authored by Matsumura and his colleagues. The event was planned in conjunction with the publication of the book.

Matsumura began a long-term project on dementia in 2017. The project has been carried out in the print and web editions of the Kyoto Shimbun newspaper where he works, in a photo exhibition using a dummy book at KG+SELECT in the spring of 2022, in an exhibition space utilizing a machiya townhouse and a specially produced newspaper at KYOTOGRAPHIE this spring, and in a book

This summer. We have used various forms of media to create opportunities to learn about dementia and to convey what we can learn from dementia.
This exhibition traces the various ways of communicating that we have worked on. We will also explore new ways of communicating that fit the space of THE RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES, providing visitors with multiple perspectives.

We decided to hold this exhibition in conjunction with World Alzheimer’s Day in the hope that by creating a place where visitors can learn about and casually discuss dementia, each person will be able to weave the threads of his or her heart, leading to the “society of living together,” which is also the title of new book.

Information about the contents of the exhibition will be posted on our social media. Please keep an eye on it.

About Kazuhiko Matsumura

Born in 1980, photojournalist Kazuhiko Matsumura started working for the Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbun in 2003. Since then he has been exploring topics related to human life, social security, and care work. He has published two photobooks: Subtle Beauty (Kyoto Shimbun Publishing Center, 2014), about the lives of maiko (geisha apprentices) and geiko in Kyoto, and Guru Guru> (self-published, 2016), a personal project tracing the interwoven paths of life through photographs of birth and death in his own family. At KG+ in spring 2019, Matsumura exhibited his series Elusive Rainbow, about the life and work of Dr. Kazuteru Hayakawa (1924–2018), a Kyoto-based pioneer of elderly-friendly medical care. Having been on the receiving end of the medical care system himself, Dr. Hayakawa possessed a multifaceted view of issues surrounding medical care. Elusive Rainbow depicts the history of social and medical care in Japan through Dr. Hayakawa’s life; it won an Honorable Mention at the 2021 Canon New Cosmos of Photography Awards. Heartstrings was unveiled at KG+SELECT 2022 and won the jury’s Grand Prize.
