Reminders Photography Stronghold Gallery will be organizing the first exhibition of 2017, Mayumi Suzuki’s “The Restoration Will.” She is one of the 2016 Photobook As Object workshop participants and she has been working on her book project “The Restoration Will” almost a year since the workshop and finally it’ll be launched at the exhibition. Prior to the show, Mayumi is sharing a series of her essay.

Paper from Ishinomaki

One of the merits of a handmade book is that we can edit the layout or design freely, and choose the paper type or method of printing. I think the choice of paper and materials can intensify our thought process with texture and feel. Even the weight was a choice, I was recommended to choose lighter paper types for shipping overseas.

There are many paper companies in Japan. We have a large choice, so it is difficult to decide which paper to use. For the inkjet printer, it is good to use matt paper rather than shiny or glossy ones. I tried more than 10 types of paper for my book, and then I found the special paper ‘MONTESION’ which is made in Ishinomaki. I really liked the quality and rough texture; it gave great expression and beautiful black tone when used in the inkjet printer.

This paper was developed and sold as a restoration product from the Tohoku region. There is a paper factory owned by Nippon paper industries Co., LTD located in Ishinomaki, next to my hometown of Onagawa. It was also damaged by the tsunami 5 years ago but they managed to repair the factory and restart production.

It is great that the paper and my story have a shared meaning of restoration. I hope all readers enjoy touching the pages with MONTESION in my book.
