In March and April 2018, Yumi Goto from Reminders Photography Stronghold (RPS) and Alex Bocchetto from Akina Books will collaborate to conduct a 6-day experimental photobook workshop. Both RPS and Akina Books are renown in the photobook world for their original and unique creative approach to the photobook form. With its innovative photobooks as well as influential presence, Akina stands out in the photobook community. Next spring 2018, Akina will publish Yusuke Takagi’s “Kagerou,” a special prize winner of FUAM Istanbul Photobook Dummy Award (2017) and one of the book dummies created through RPS photobook workshop in 2016.

Exploring the space between cinema, video art and the artist book, The “Still Movement” workshop will explore new ways to translate photographic materials into the book form, experimenting with sequencing, movement, repetitions, long takes, jump cuts, cross cutting, fade-in and zoom-out as tools to convey meaning.
Following a thread through montage theory and photobook history, participants will explore new directions for their own photographic project.
The result of the workshop for each participant will be a cinematic dummy that explores new possibilities in storytelling and photobook making.
Cinematic pacing and techniques borrowed from film editing and video art will be investigated as alternative ways to make a still visual narrative move.
A book is a three-dimensional object that is experienced through time, one spread at the time. Every photobook is a self-contained universe with its own set of rules. A series of photographs can be a starting point for the process of creating a book. Editing, sequencing, design and choice of materials are all opportunities to add new layers of meaning to a body of work. During the genesis of a photobook, ambiguities and clashes, unexpected juxtapositions and riddles will emerge, revealing the pleasures and pains of visual language. Every single picture will gain a different meaning when placed in a broader perspective of the book as a whole.

This is a workshop for photographers, visual artists, video-makers, teachers who are seeking to experiment with a new spectre of possibilities in storytelling and photobook making.
*Please bring your laptop. You ought to have basic competency in InDesign or other layout programs (not mandatory, you may learn how to use those applications during the workshop)
*You need to bring your own tools and materials. (participants will be advised later)

[Important] Participation to the workshop is not on a first come first serve basis. All applications will be closely evaluated and the list of selected participants will be announced in mid-January. We cannot disclose the results before that. Your participation will be canceled if you cannot pay the full tuition right after you receive a positive result.
Please note that in order to avoid last-minute cancellation and/or losing contact without payment, it is important that you be certain of your attendance to the workshop on all the dates, and that you will be able to finance the tuition.
Please include the following in your application:
- Your name
- Your email address and mobile number
- URL to website or online-gallery where we can view your work. If you have made a book/books, PDF file, please include spreads of your dummy in JPG, or an online video. If the size of your attached file is big, please use a file transfer service to avoid rejection of your email. All files must be in one folder. The title of the folder should be your full name.
- Description and/or ideas relating to book making for your project (A4, 1 page). Mixing different sources and languages is encouraged. Still pictures, screenshots and texts are allowed. Please send up to 40 images belonging to the same body of work. They should be in JPG, 72 dpi and around 1200 pixel on the longer side. Put everything in one folder and compress it before sending.

The instructors will closely review your application, and they will prepare suggestions and advice before the workshop starts.

Alex Bocchetto was born in Torino, Italy in 1981, where he studied cinema, visual studies and journalism before moving to London, where he founded AKINA books with Valentina Abenavoli in 2012.
Passionate about film theory, books and printing, he is interested in the intersection between paper, moving images and stories. Self-taught bookbinder and designer, he curates the hand-made editions of Akinabooks.
Beside the publishing house, he runs a program of intensive workshops, lectures and teaching in collaboration with international partners such as: Paris Photobook club (Paris, FR, 2012), IC Visual Lab (Bristol, UK, 2013), PlanaR (Bari, IT, 2014), Book Case Study (Den Haag, NE, 2014), Radical Matter -Gomma Mag (London, UK, 2014), The Photographers Gallery (London, UK, 2014), ISSP International Summerschool (Rīga, LV, 2015), Mimar Ainan Güzel Sanatlar üniversitesi (Universitá di Belle Arti, Istanbul, 2016).
