The 23rd Grant Recipient Christian Vium Photo Exhibition “Revisited” | November 23 – December 1
We are pleased to present “Revisited,” a photo exhibition by Christian Vium, recipient of the 23rd Reminders Photography Stronghold Grant. This work was selected by the jury, Teun Van Der Heijden.
The artist himself will also be visiting Japan, with an artist talk scheduled on the opening day, November 23. We will continue to share updates on exhibition details through our social media channels, so please stay tuned.
We warmly welcome everyone to visit during the exhibition period.
“Revisited” is a research-based project in three parts, comprising material generated during anthropological fieldwork among indigenous peoples in Central Australia, the Brazilian Amazon, and Siberia.
Over the past decade, Christian Vium uncovered, analysed, and curated a vast selection of archival photographs produced in the period between the 1867 and the 1912. He subsequently repatriated them from collections in Europe and the United States to where they were originally recorded more than a century earlier. In close collaboration with descendants of the indigenous people portrayed in the archival photographs, he conducted in-depth analytical conversations around the images, which came to serve as points of departure for subsequent photographic and filmic re-interpretations of some of the archival photographs. This methodology opened an affective and reflexive space for cultural critique, in which descendants entered an embodied dialogue with their ancestors across time and in space. Through experimental companionship based in long-term research, Revisited contributes new insights into epistemological and ontological questions related to the photographic and moving image.
