TETSUO KASHIWADA’S EXHIBITION “WARASONO” 6/15-6/30

We are pleased to announce the photography exhibition “WARASONO” by Tetsuo Kashiwada as our June 2024 special exhibition. For many years, Kashiwada has been photographing his parents and the house they live in. As an only child, he discussed with his parents in 2015 what to do with the house in the countryside of Shiga Prefecture after they pass away. As a result of deciding not to inherit the house, his parents began preparing for the end of their lives, including dealing with the house.
Kashiwada himself was not born or raised in this house or on this land. Therefore, to someday recall his parents, this place, and these landscapes, he decided to document them in a book. He also participated in the photobook creation workshop “PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT” held in 2023, working on this project. This exhibition will showcase that world in a spatial format.
In conjunction with this exhibition, the artist’s book “WARASONO,” which Kashiwada himself handled from printing to binding, will soon be completed. Details about reservations will be announced shortly, so please stay tuned.

WARASONO

I have been photographing my parents and their house, where they live apart from me. As an only child, when I decided not to inherit this house, my parents began preparing for the end of their lives, including dealing with the house.
Every time I return home, I see my father organizing and disposing of furniture. Meanwhile, my mother tends to the flowers in the garden, nurturing them seasonally.
My father’s act of discarding and my mother’s act of nurturing flowers reflect the presence of life and death in their actions.
And when I return to Tokyo, my mother always gives me flowers from the garden. By the time I arrive in Tokyo, the flowers seem a bit wilted. Each time I look at those flowers, I can’t help but see my parents and the house in them.
Someday, my parents will pass away, and the house will be gone.
That’s why I decided to document and preserve these memories.

Tetsuo Kashiwada (b. 1988) engages with the people and natural landscapes he encounters on his travels, using photography to explore questions or feelings of unease that arise. In his work, he addresses environmental issues and the separation and coexistence of humankind and na-ture. He has won several awards, including the Ruinart Japan Award in 2023, the Grand Prize of the YPF Photo Awards in 2022, the Japan Photo Award in 2021, and an Honourable Mention at the 43rd New Cosmos of Photography in 2020. His work is frequently shown in solo and group exhibitions such as the Yakushima International Photo Festival in Yakushima, the OFF GRID – Independent Photo Festival Vienna (both in 2022) ,PhMuseum Days（2023）, Rotterdam Photo (2024) and Kyotographie（2024）
