About the event
The next edition of our annual photobook event “3BOOKS” at Reminders Photography Stronghold will be held online due to the current situation under the state of emergency to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.
We will invite photographer and photo historian Ben Krewinkel for our guest to talk and discuss “Africa in the photobook”, a website he manages about the changing visual representation of Africa as expressed through the medium of the photobook.
Photography in Africa has a historical context, heavily dealing with Eurocentrist colonialism.
What is the power behind photographic observation?
Having a background also in anthropology, political propaganda, and maybe recently photojournalism, the power relationship between the subject and observer is especially apparent in photos in Africa.
Photographs also show the history of a diaspora of people who were forced to move to various countries and continents.
The role of photography is to carry not only the political background but also to visualize the life and culture of individuals and the people.
What can we learn from the archive?
What are the past and future possibilities of photography in Africa?
The changing perspective on the African continent will be the theme.
Ben Krewinkel will introduce his recommended 3 books from his collection.
We are looking forward to having one and all to participate in the viewing of the online event.
