Reminders Photography Stronghold is celebrating its 2nd year anniversary this year. And to celebrate the occasion, we are holding an exhibition featuring Daichi Koda’s “Small good lie.”

Koda has been making works based on stories from his personal sense of distance from death and loss. For this exhibition, he has created a visual narrative from his own feelings: the intimate and sometimes emotional feeling he perceives from his life with his girlfriend, and the innermost feeling of distance existing between familiar life and death. This work will also be presented as handmade books, and the viewer can experience Koda’s sense of distance and his worldview through the exhibition and the photo book. However, the photographer Koda finds it most ideal if “every viewer takes a different route” as he/she goes through the exhibition. We hope you take your time to view the exhibition and the photo book.

RPS LIMITED EDITION: DAICHI KODA’S HANDMADE PHOTOBOOK “SMALL GOOD LIE”

Beside the exhibition, Koda is planning a limited production and sales of the experimental handmade photo book “Springboard,” which is connected to his next project. We will also be holding the 1st Atlas Lab Workshop and our 2-year celebration party during the exhibition period. We hope you will drop by our gallery to celebrate the occasion with us.

From the artist’s statement:
Since the time she said she wanted to die, I have been thinking that it could really happen. Through deaths of people close to me, I know that one dies and that it can happen unexpectedly. Her symptoms were severe, and she looked worn out, painful and small. In those days, living was difficult for us. I was somehow trying to prevent her from giving up on living, and I told her many small lies.

While thinking of her possible death, I felt also that I needed to solve my own problems.
The issue was what to do now as I was gazing at the loss. As I sunk deeper into dialogue with images, the boundaries became ambiguous. And in this ambiguity, I felt that I could feel the temperature within me. The indefinable landscape was showing the coincidence of matters. Death was imminent.
