5/9 19PM TALK EVENT : “The Threshold of Printing — Newspaper and Expression Beyond”

As part of the KG+ SPECIAL exhibition “Threshold — Images in Flux,” a two-person exhibition by Tamaki Yoshida and Kazuhiko Matsumura, a specially produced newsprint publication is being distributed at the venue. Created in collaboration with Kyoto Shimbun Printing, a supporter of the exhibition, this publication extends the exhibition into another printed form.

While Kyoto Shimbun Printing plays the essential role of delivering the daily news, it has also continued to push the possibilities of newspaper printing beyond its conventional function. Rather than simply producing printed matter, the company has engaged with the very conditions of the newspaper as a medium: paper, ink, printing, layout, and temporality, opening new possibilities for expression.

In this exhibition, photographs are layered, made translucent, and set in motion, creating a space where images do not settle into a single fixed form. What happens when that sensibility is translated into the medium of newsprint? Taking the specially produced newsprint publication as a point of departure, this talk invites the head of Kyoto Shimbun Printing’s print services division and its art director to join Yoshida, Matsumura, and Yumi Goto in discussing the expressive potential held within newsprint.

Exhibition space, books, printed matter — each takes a different form, yet all are connected by the same underlying question: under what conditions do images and information come into being, and how far can they unsettle our perception and understanding? Through this talk, we will revisit that question from the perspective of newsprint as a medium.
