Several days have now passed since the exhibition opened.
In the gallery, each visitor encounters the works from a different distance and within a different span of time, and moments in which images emerge without ever fully settling into a single form have gradually begun to accumulate.
In the two-person exhibition Threshold — Images in Flux, overlapping, layering, shifting, and obscuring are used to create a space that resists closure into a finished image or a singular interpretation. What should be visible does not fully resolve, and what seems understood continues to waver. Through this experience, we are reminded that seeing and understanding are not necessarily the same thing.
Under what conditions does an image come into being?
What is it that we are actually seeing?
And what do we too quickly assume we have understood?
For this talk, Yusuke Nakanishi, Co-Director of KYOTOGRAPHIE, will join exhibiting artists Kazuhiko Matsumura and Tamaki Yoshida, together with the curator of the exhibition, Yumi Goto, to reflect on the “conditions of the image” that this exhibition brings into question. For those who have already seen the exhibition, the conversation may offer a chance to reconsider that experience from another angle. For those who have yet to visit, it may serve as a compelling point of entry.
