WELCOME ON BOARD, RPS GRANT JURY, SALVATORE VITALE
Salvatore Vitale (b. 1986, Palermo, Italy) is a Swiss-based visual artist, editor and educator.
In his multi-layered artistic practice and resear- ch, Vitale’s work focuses on the development and complexity of modern societies exploring power structures, visual politics and technology, whilst making use of expanded documentary analysis, including elements of fiction, speculative storytel- ling and the use of multiple visual forms.
His work has been awarded internationally, including the Swiss Arts Council Grant (2015 and 2020), the PHmuseum Award Grant (2017), Swiss Design Awards (2018), Foam Talent (2018), Pun- ctum Award (2018), and Pro Helvetia Shanghai Research Grant (2019-2020).
Vitale’s work has been exhibited widely in museums and at photo festivals, with solo shows at the Swiss Foundation for Photography Winter- thur (2018), the Photoforum Pasquart Biel/Bienne (2017), MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow (2018), Hamburg Triennale of Photo- graphy (2018). Other shows include Foam Photo- graphy Museum Amsterdam (2019), the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation (2019), OCAT Shanghai (2017), OCAT Shenzhen (2018), Fotodok Utrecht (2018), Kibla Contemporary Art Space Maribor (2019), T3 Photo Festival Tokyo (2017) and Lianzhou Foto Festival (2018).
One of Vitale’s most recent projects is How To Secure a Country (2014-2019). How To Secu- re a Country – From Border Policing via Weather
Forecast to Social Engineering – A Visual Study of 21st-Century Statehood was published by Lars Müller Publishers in June 2019.

Vitale is a lecturer at the Lucerne Universi- ty of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) where he leads the Transmedia Storytelling programme.
He has led workshops worldwide and has
taught at art colleges internationally including the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), the Paris College of Arts (PCA), the University of South Wales (USW) and the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE) to name but a few.
Vitale is also the co-founder and editor-in-chief of YET magazine, a Swiss-based international photography magazine that focuses on the evolu- tion of the photography practice within the contemporary art field.
