In 2014, Daiki, at the age of 23, tragically ended his own life. The Dialogue of Two is a poignant story documenting the three years that followed his passing, capturing the life of his grandmother, who lived with Daiki until the end of her days. This work explores how those left behind cope with loss and communicate with the departed, centering around a recurring story that Akihito Yoshida’s grandmother often shared during her lifetime.
The prequel to this story, The Absence of Two, was created as a limited edition of 111 hand-bound copies during the “Photobook as Object” workshop at Reminders Photography Stronghold (RPS). This earlier work depicts the everyday life shared by Daiki and his grandmother and its eventual conclusion. Exhibited at the 2017 KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival, it received widespread acclaim both in Japan and internationally.
In 2022, The Dialogue of Two was released as a limited artist edition of 49 copies in collaboration with RPS curator Yumi Goto. It garnered high praise, being shortlisted for the Image Vevey Award 2023/24 (Switzerland) and the 47th Kimura Ihei Award (Japan), and sold out almost immediately.
Now, this work has been reimagined and will be published by Three Books in January 2025. Ahead of its release, we are pleased to announce that pre-orders are now open.
Those who pre-order through RPS will receive a special bonus: print proofs produced during the printing tests. The book will also be available for purchase at the Akihito Yoshida photo exhibition, “The Dialogue of Two – Publication Launch by Three Books,” starting January 11, 2025.
