RPS PHOTOBOOK MASTERCLASS 2023

From 2015 to 2019, RPS held annual photobook masterclasses, and the photobooks created by participants received global recognition and success, including published works. Although we had to cancel the workshops in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions, we successfully resumed in 2023. We are pleased to announce that the photobook masterclass will be held again in December 2024. If you have been waiting for this opportunity, we encourage you to consider participating.

During the six-day workshop, instructors Teun van der Heijden, Sandra van der Doelen, and RPS curator Yumi Goto will guide participants in transforming their work into photobooks from various perspectives. The program covers a wide range of topics, including editing and composition processes, concept development, book formats, paper types, layout, typography choices, design decisions, and guidance on printing processes. This workshop is intended for photographers interested in the concept, editing, and sequencing of photobooks. Participants will engage in lively discussions on how to shift from individual photos to meaningful photobooks in the current photographic environment, inspiring each other creatively and conceptually.

Throughout the workshop, Teun van der Heijden, Sandra van der Doelen, and Yumi Goto will share their experience in concept development for photobooks and photographic works. Participants will be guided through the entire photobook production process, from concept organization to completion, challenging them to create unique photobooks that complement the photographer’s perspective. The workshop consists of lectures, sharing unique perspectives on editing for photobooks, practical sessions, development time for participants’ projects, and time for photobook production.

“Although we live in a digital age there is more attention for the paper photobook than ever before. Since the invention of the camera phone, we have started to use photography as a visual language in a broader spectrum from the colloquial to the formal, a language that has no geographical or national boundaries. On the Internet, we are constantly in contact with the rest of the world. We still have to fully embrace and adjust to this new frontier in visual communication. The paper photobook represents solidity, something we can literally hold on to. It is a tangible object and it has the aura of an original art object. The contemporary photobook can be seen as a visual novel. It is with this in mind that graphic design agency Heijdens Karwei designs their photography books.”
—Teun van der Heijden
