self-portrait RPS

Dean Chapman is a photographer and filmmaker based in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the northeast of England, and studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art, Cornwall. For over a decade, he has been a curator at Newcastle’s Side Gallery – the UK’s only gallery dedicated to documentary photography – and has worked extensively with the AmberSide’s archive. In 2015 he curated the photographs from the archive for the award-winning For Ever Amber exhibition at Newcastle’s Laing Gallery.

Since 1990, Dean Chapman has photographed issues concerning Burma, which led to his winning the European Publishers’ Award for Photography 1998. This resulted in the publication of the book Karenni, the Forgotten War of a Nation Besieged – an intimate portrayal of ethnic insurgency in Burma. Exhibitions of these photographs were shown in the UK, Italy, Bangladesh and Japan. Subsequent exhibitions include, Burma: Darkness in the Golden Land and Burma’s Children of Conflict.

Dean Chapman first lived in Japan from 1993. Since that time he has produced several extensive bodies of work about Japan including: ki.do.ai.raku is a broad portrayal of the Japanese people, during the making of which he travelled to all of Japan’s prefectures; Shibuya Crossing surveys Tokyo’s most iconic intersection and it’s environs; Tsunami, the Archaeology of a Disaster chronicles Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami, examining the ways in which identity, culture and loss can be conveyed through photographic narrative.

In 1999, Side Gallery commissioned Dean Chapman to document communities in the former Durham Coalfield, which resulted in the exhibition Shifting Ground. He was subsequently awarded an Arts Council England production grant to photograph working animals in the northeast of England. More recently, he has been making films about Burmese exiles in the UK. He was a recipient of NEPN’s inaugural 2016 Develop Awards.

Dean Chapman is represented by Panos Pictures, London.
