ONCE AGAIN! CONGRATULATIONS! 2013 NEWSPRINT AWARD WINNER, “26 PATIENTS, 1 EMPLOYEE AND 1 VISITOR AT SANTA LUCIA’S MENTAL INSTITUTE” BY DAFNE CAPELLA AND FINALISTS, “HATEFUL” BY HATEFUL AND “AWAY FROM HOME” BY KURSAT BAYHAN.

Here is Matthew Carson‘s overview of 2013 Newsprint Award.

Matthew-PortraitI was honored to be asked to be one of the judges for a new photography publication award: The 2013 Newsprint Award (Bookdummypress and Reminders Photography Stronghold). Newsprint has an aesthetic and a feel that greatly appeals to me.  For me it is a medium that has a lot of immediacy and raw energy contained within it. Soft, unfinished and fragile newsprint can be used in many unique and experimental ways. It’s cheap and democratic form means that it never becomes stymied by being too precious or overly self-aware. In reviewing all the brilliant entries I constantly thought about which project would work best as a ‘newsprint’ publication as opposed to a book or a more traditional magazine article. I also looked for projects with a strong narrative, where the text and images truly complemented one another. Projects that said just enough, that were not trying to be something else and were truly designed for the newsprint experience. The entries were all very strong and I was overwhelmed with the amazing amount of real artistic talent that there is out there. Dafne Capella convinced me with a project of bold and striking portrait images accompanied by a very intriguing story that compelled me to look at the images over and over again as I tried to unravel the mystery that they contained.

Thank you for your attention! We will keep you updated with more progress on Dafne Capella’s newsprint production and photo exhibition.
