Call for Applications: Experimental Workshop Atlas Lab “Editing” Now Open!

In 2023, photobook production masterclasses were held at Reminders Photography Stronghold.

We are excited to announce the opening of applications for the Experimental Workshop Atlas Lab “Editing”. This specialized workshop will be held at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES.
We are pleased to introduce the inaugural specialized workshop on editing led by instructors Teun van der Heijden, Sandra van der Doolen, and Yumi Goto. They have been teaching masterclasses in photobook production at Reminders Photography Stronghold (Tokyo) since 2015. This workshop at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES will focus on the critical aspects of editing and sequencing for photobooks, exhibitions, and portfolio creation.
Next to having a clear concept about your photographic project, the activity of choosing the images and sequencing them lies at the heart of building an impactful story.
In a world where the visual language is omnipresent, we still have to adjust and learn how to critically reflect on it. The meaning of a photographic narration cannot be disconnected from factual and cultural influences. Our narrative memory gives us the ability to re-adjust the bits and pieces of factual information that are stored in our brains and turn it into stories. This is what we call association, an act that is very personal. Next to this more conscious way of analyzing, we are influenced by several subconscious layers, things we refer to as mood, rhythm, and flow.
The program offers a full toolkit of the editing process. Through exercises, it distinguishes between subconscious and conscious analysis, and includes lectures on editing and composition processes, as well as practical editing sessions. However, the content may be subject to change as the workshop progresses.
Overview of the editing process: Complete knowledge from basic editing methods to finer techniques.

Practical exercises: Hands-on activities learning specific editing techniques.
Lectures: Explanations of theoretical backgrounds and concepts.
Analysis skills: Understanding skills to distinguish between conscious and subconscious analysis.
Editing and composition techniques: Techniques for selecting and combining photographs and other visual elements to construct a story.
Concept development: Methods for developing themes and stories for artworks.

By covering all these elements, participants will comprehensively acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for editing work.
Even though the workshop does not offer actual production and execution of dummies or maquettes, book formats, mise-en-scène, layout, design decisions, and more precisely, paper choices, typography, framing, and guidance on printing processes, will be part of the workshop’s discourse.
Participants are expected to engage creatively and conceptually, shifting individual photos into valuable visual narratives and portfolios, fostering lively discussions.
Please note, while this workshop does not include actual production of dummy books or portfolios, it aims to explore solutions through editing, helping participants discover the direction of their projects and deepen storytelling through photography.
We look forward to your participation in this workshop.
