OUR COMMISSIONED JUDGE FOR THE GRANT, STATON WINTER

Born in New Zealand, and raised in New York City, Staton Winter studied textile design at the Fashion Institute before moving on to the photography world in 1982.

Working as a photo editor and freelance photographer for the last 25 years, Staton Winter has covered major events like the conflict in former Yugoslavia, war in Iraq, and South Sudan’s one year independence celebrations, to travel features like eagle hunting in Kyrgyzstan, and table dancing in Greece. He has photographed in over 60 countries.

As the Director of Photography for the UN Mission in Liberia, West Africa, since 2010, Staton Winter is working on continuing coverage of Liberia’s long road to recovery after back-to-back civil wars, mentoring and capacity-building of Liberian photographers, and recently the Ebola outbreak there.

Staton Winter has been published regularly in the world’s best news journals, including The New York Times, Times of London, and National Geographic, among others, and has been a contributing photographer to Polaris Images since 1997.

Staton Winter has images on permanent display at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and has produced many photo exhibits of his social documentary work for the United Nations.
