The Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive (APPA) was launched in early 2013 by Daniel Boetker-Smith – and is a charity – a not-for-profit physical library of self-published and independent photobooks based in Melbourne. The archive is made up of photobooks donated by artists, editors or publishers; it features work either produced in the Asia-Pacific region, or work by photographers from an Asia-Pacific country. They work hard to show these books to audiences at photography festivals, shows, and events all over the world to promote the work of photographers. In 2013 the APPA was featured at the Obscura Photography Festival in Malaysia, and at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in Australia, and is soon to appear at the Singapore Photobook Show, the Tokyo Art Book Fair and the Angkor Photo Festival in Cambodia.

The APPA accepts submissions of DIY, limited edition, print-on-demand, handmade, artist’s books, and photobooks of all descriptions. The APPA also provides a physical site for the public, artists and scholars alike to reflect on the photobook as a distinct, ubiquitous and relevant phenomenon, now and into the future. As an archive, APPA is democratic, therefore all photobook submissions are treated equally, and all relevant submissions are accepted.

The goal of the APPA is simple: to preserve and make accessible to current and future generations the broad practices and approaches encapsulated in the production of contemporary photobooks in the Asia-Pacific region.

APPA will be accepting submissions at the Tokyo Art Book Fair; bring your book along, submit it to the archive, it will be featured online, and your book will travel to photography festivals and be seen by thousands of people all over world.
