2024 PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT SHOWCASE: FEBRUARY 15TH-24TH, 2025
Since 2014 Jan Russell and Yumi Goto have organized the
“PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT” photography book production workshop. Most recently it was held in June of 2024 at the Reminders Photography Stronghold in Tokyo. Reminders Photography Stronghold is pleased to announce that we will share the results of that workshop with a special exhibition in February of 2025.
In this workshop, participants delved into story lines from various angles to share their visual narratives of complex and multifaceted events with others. They completed their work as a collection of photographs. The process is a series of trial and error. It takes time and effort to arrive at “the book you wanted to make” and “the book as a work of art with a sense of existence” that you have not yet seen.
Many of the participants and lecturers in this workshop were from overseas. Having a group of artists from diverse backgrounds made discussions lively and engaging.
Perspectives from different languages, cultures, and ways of thinking added depth to their own books and helped them find and improve missing elements.
Rough-hewn dummy books were in the hands of the participants at the end of the workshop. These dummy books served as a starting point and, even after eight months, production is still progressing toward the “book! wanted to make.”
During the exhibition period, the participating artists will be present to show how they proceeded with the production of the dummy books. Please come and experience the work while getting to know the varied layers that go into the production process of a photo book. We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.
