RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES | Artist-in-Residence Program: Fall–Winter 2025 – Applications Now Accepted


RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES started as a branch of Reminders Photography Stronghold in Tokyo and has hosted exhibitions, workshops, and artist residencies.
We are now accepting applications for our Fall–Winter 2025 Artist-in-Residence program.

The selected artist will stay at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES for two weeks between October and December 2025, working freely in a private studio. Optional mentorship with RPS curator Yumi Goto is available upon request.
This opportunity is open to one applicant—either from Japan or abroad—who wishes to develop and deepen an existing body of work. There is no requirement for the project to be site-specific to Kyoto.

Eligibility

  • Open to individuals of any nationality

  • Groups or organizations may apply, but only one person may stay on-site

  • This is a self-funded residency. All travel, accommodation, meals, production, and related costs must be covered by the selected artist
    Note: RPS can provide letters of support upon request if you are applying for external grants.

Residency Fee

  • 3,300 yen/day (studio use)

  • 3,000 yen/day (utilities during winter)
    If utility use significantly exceeds standard rates, we will request reimbursement for the actual amount.

Note: Options cannot be selected separately.

Optional Add-ons

 

#1 Mentorship by curator Yumi Goto

  • Up to 4 sessions during the residency period (max. 2 hrs/session)

  • Fee: 55,000 yen

  • Additional sessions may be available in exchange for assistance at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES (e.g. gallery tasks)

#2 Exhibition Option

  • Fee: 165,000 yen (for 2 weekends)

  • Includes use of the gallery space for exhibition and outcome presentation

  • Includes curatorial guidance and mentorship by Yumi Goto

  • The exhibition must begin and end within 2025

  • The exhibition should start shortly after the end of the residency period

  • Note: Utility fees for the exhibition period are not included.
    　An additional 2,000 yen per day will be charged separately for electricity and related costs associated with the use of the gallery area.

The first and second floors of the “Igarashi Room” in the Residency Area are available for use by one eligible applicant. Kitchen, toilet, washroom, and bathroom will be shared.

Resident artist Katelyn-Jane Dunn participated in the 2023 Photobook as Object (PBAO) workshop and has continued to develop her project this year through the RPS mentorship program, working closely with curator Yumi Goto. During her residency in Kyoto, she focused on further updating her dummy book.
