PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT 2025 KYOTO
Photobook as Object is a photobook-making workshop co-led by Belgian photographer Jan Rosseel and RPS curator Yumi Goto. Since its inception in 2014, the program has brought together photographers from around the world to explore the potential of the photobook as a tactile, experiential object.
In 2025, for the first time, the workshop is held across two cities—Tokyo and Kyoto. The Kyoto session is currently underway at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES, where participants have spent six intensive days examining the structure, editing, and physical construction of photobooks. Through deep exploration and trial-and-error, each has developed a unique dummy book as the culmination of their process.
This year’s participants have engaged a wide range of themes—personal and collective rage, memory and silence, caregiving and solidarity, institutional critique, humor, and inner landscapes. Their works include deeply personal explorations of invisible violence against women in Mexico, the reconstruction of memory through dialogue with a mother, examinations of family archives, poetic reflections on dreams and nature, and the delicate tension between speech and silence.
What unites all these projects is a sincere and thoughtful attempt to use the photobook as a means of connecting personal experience to broader social and human contexts.
This event offers a rare opportunity to encounter these emerging works directly from the voices of the artists themselves. We warmly welcome your visit and engagement with these powerful and timely projects.
