– The War Within –

I had a dream of walking into the deep jungle with gray skulls along the trails and the presence of ghosts and spirits in the air. They simply let me walk through their territory, and I crossed the mountain, and showed up interviewing people at the other side of the Thai-Myanmar border. Then I woke up.
Then a few weeks later, I was asked to be a fixer covering the Karen conflict, the longest civil war in history, with an Italian photographer and a reporter. I was fascinated that I was going to be there for real.
So I told them about my dream. I was not interested to make a story, only to personally follow that faded black and white dream visual with my plastic holga. Ettore Mo, a journalist who is still active in his 80 years of age, encouraged me to follow my instinct more than any rule or standard. He told me, “Believe in yourself. Tell a story in the way you want to with your passion. Be it love story, politics or whatever, either in photography or writing. That’s good enough and that’s worth doing.”
Anyway, so to sum it up, it’s the war within my dream. It’s the war within their land, and it’s the war within their minds.
