Reminders Photography Stronghold Gallery will be organizing the first exhibition of 2017, Mayumi Suzuki’s “The Restoration Will.” She is one of the 2016 Photobook As Object workshop participants and she has been working on her book project “The Restoration Will” almost a year since the workshop and finally it’ll be launched at the exhibition. Prior to the show, Mayumi is sharing a series of her essay.
Mayumi Suzuki’s exhibition has been successfully closed now! Thank you!
Map and Snapshot
The scars on the recovered snapshots sometimes seemed to look like the peninsula on a map. The East coast of Japan on which the tsunami occurred is technically known as a ‘Rias Cost’, It has a number of coastal inlets each formed by the partial submergence of an unglaciated river valley. There is a similar landform in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. The pacific coast of Northern Japan has been the victim of a tsunami many times, including The Meiji Sanriku tsunami in 1896, Showa Sanriku tsunami in 1933 and a large tsunami caused by an earthquake in Chile, South America in 1960. These “Rias” terrains were easily destroyed by tsunamis because of the deep coves, with second and third tsunami waves moving even higher up the valley sides than the first one.
I tried to visualize these images by making a layer with my scarred family snap and the geographic map for my book. At first, I tried to make the image by using a normal google map, mixing it with the snap and putting it on the next page, but it didn’t work well. I was considering if it was necessary or not, I was trying to understand what would work well for the book.
