I’LL DIE FOR YOU: exploring the intimate bond between man & land
This project was born in 2010 after I came across an article on farmer suicides in India. It affected me deeply. Maybe because my own grandfather was a farmer or because I had been to India & struggled to understand death, particularly suicide, in a country where I felt people worked hard to survive in order to avert death. My intention is to show the intimate bond between man & land by focusing on farmers & the natural elements that make their survival & livelihood possible as well as impossible.
Laura El-Tantawy is an Egyptian photographer. She was born in Worcestershire, England to Egyptian parents & grew up between Saudi Arabia, Egypt & the US. In 2002, she started her career as a newspaper photographer with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel & Sarasota Herald-Tribune (USA). In 2006, she became freelance so she could focus on pursuing personal projects. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia (USA) with dual degrees in journalism & political science.
