About the Exhibition:
In December 2016 a six-day workshop, “Photobook Masterclass”, was held at Reminders Photography Stronghold with the goal to make long term photography projects into books. The photographers worked with two invited instructors, Teun van der Heijden and Sandra van der Doelen.

The workshop began with an ‘elevator pitch’, in which each participant was given three minutes to deliver a summary of his or her own project. In the first and second day of the workshop the participants sorted through their large volumes of archive prints laid out on the tables so everyone could observe the editing process. Basic to more advanced book design techniques were learnt by repeatedly trying out ideas and seeking to enhance communication in book form. The material choices such as paper, binding, shape, thickness and hardcover or softcover of the book were carefully decided based on their project concept.

A book as a tangible media allows us to compose multiple layers of communication. Like binding sections to accumulate the thickness of a book, the participants dug down deep into their project concept and added depth to the narrative. After the workshop, there were two feedback sessions for each participant at three month intervals, followed by six months to enthusiastically brush up on the prototype of their dummy book.

“Trial and Error” said Teun van der Heijden continuously throughout the workshop. It is only by doing and making mistakes to test an idea for its practical usage that the book will take shape. During the exhibition, the participants will exhibit their past dummy books to show how the projects progressed. In addition to the book exhibition there will be additional material on the gallery walls from each participant to show a broader understanding of their projects.

By now, three of the ten participants of the exhibition are nominated in this years’ international dummy book awards. We will be thrilled to see you at Reminders Photography Stronghold and please see for yourself the potential of the photobook and its possibilities for story-telling.
